Shipwrecked migrants – the EU organises an emergency meeting

On Sunday, the European Union said it was “deeply affected” by the latest sinking of a boat full of migrants in the Mediterranean, in which nearly 700 people died. It has announced there will be a meeting between the Home Affairs ministers and Foreign Affairs ministers to put preventative measures in place soon. “While the countries the migrants come from and the countries they travel through take no action to stop these desperate trips, people will continue to risk their lives. A large part of our approach is to work with other countries. A meeting between Home Affairs ministers and Foreign Affairs ministers will be organised to this end”, the European Commission said in a press release.
