Nepal Earthquake: the European Commission gives 22.6 million euros in financial aid

The European Commission has increased the financial aid it will send to Nepal: it is now more than 22 million euros. The total amount sent by the institution and member States to help the victims of the Earthquake has now reached nearly 40 million euros. The European Commission doubled its emergency aid to 6 million euros on Monday. Tents, food, safe drinking water and medication can now be bought thanks to this money. With the rainy season approaching, reinforcing shelters and getting aid to isolated areas is a priority, said Chris Stylianides, the European Commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management. He was speaking after a three day visit to Nepal.

The European Commission has also decided to give Nepal another 16.6 million euro aid packet earlier than planned. It was originally going to be issued as part of the aid program to develop Nepal. The country’s government, which was already very dependent on international aid before the Earthquake, is currently dealing with severe budget issues, the Commission says.
