European Commission wants oversight powers to supervise national activity

The European Commission wants to have oversight powers to supervise national controls and tests for cars before they are authorised to go on the market, commissioner El?bieta Bie?kowska revealed to German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung on Thursday. She also believes that member states should have to publish the results of emissions testing.

"The time for allowing member states to work independently has now passed. We intend to check they are doing a good job", Mrs. Bienkowska continued. Each member state is responsible for keeping emissions in check and deciding which vehicles are authorised on the market.

The European Commission will give a more detailed account of its plans in December and discussions will take place between member states and the European Parliament.
