Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States is a new opportunity for the EU to strengthen its position on the international stage. This is especially true of defence, Prime Minister Charles Michel said on Sunday. But because of the huge unpredictability of this election, he is also calling for compromise from the Trump administration.
“In my eyes, it is more crucial than ever to have a better European defence policy. Everyone can now see very clearly that it is no longer possible to count on the United States for our security”, Mr Michel said while appearing on Zevende Dag (VRT).
He considers Donald Trump a strange candidate. “During this election, he chose simplistic, popular ideas, and said harsh things about Belgium. He continues to be unpredictable. I think it is important to be clear about Trump’s strategy and decisions over the next few months”.
The Prime Minister did say that the United States has check and balance procedures to make sure decisions are not made by a single man.
