To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Belgium, Mr Almaz Khamzayev held a briefing at Brussels Press Club on Monday 14 November. During the event, Ambassador Khamzayev also took the opportunity to inaugurate the photographic exhibition "Kazakhstan: Land of the Great Steppe".

EU institutions representative, Belgian authorities, think tanks, European and Belgian journalists attended the event.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mr Khamzayev noted that Kazakhstan celebrates an important milestone this year, namely its 25th anniversary of independence.

The Ambassador also briefed participants on the large-scale development program Nurly Zhol and the National Plan – which involves 100 concrete steps on the implementation of five institutional reforms. The plan outlines an ambitious objective of joining the rank of the top 30 most developed countries in the world.

The Ambassador also announced some important events that will take place in 2017. Firstly, Kazakhstan’s election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2017-2018 and secondly, the international EXPO 2017 exhibition in Astana which will focus on the theme of future energy.

Finally, the Ambassador underlined the importance of regional stability in Kazakhstan’s region for continued prosperity and economic development and mentioned the significant progress made with trading partners such as the European Union.

He said that the the agreement between the EU and Kazakhstan on enhanced partnership and Cooperation (EPCA), signed December 2015 in Astana, should give a significant economic boost and strengthen political ties between both parties.
