Brexit – The negotiations will start after UK’s elections

The negotiations between the EU and United Kingdom over the Brexit, will start after the newly called snap elections which is anticipated to take place on June 8, announced on Wednesday a European Commission spokesperson. The European commission president Jean-Claude Juncker spoke with British Prime Minister Theresa May over the phone on Tuesday evening on the subject. He believes that “the real political negotiations over article 50 with the United Kingdom will start after the elections”, commented the spokesperson.

British MEPs vote on Wednesday if the snap elections should take place. Theresa May’s motive for calling out the snap elections is believed to gain “a stronger hand” to negotiate the Brexit.

The next elections were scheduled to take place in 2020, but Theresa May, who is now experiencing a popularity peak, finds that the right moment has come to reinforce her legitimacy and have more “elbow room”, when the delicate negotiating period with the EU will begin.
