Tensions with North Korea – EU denounces missile launch, calls for restraint

European Union (EU) diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday strongly denounced North Korea’s missile launch over Japan and urged Pyongyang to “refrain from any further provocative action”. According to the Japanese authorities, the missile flew over the northern island of Hokkaido on Monday night before falling into the waters of the Pacific Ocean 1,180 km east of the Japanese coast, without causing any damage to planes or ships in the area.

“These actions constitute outright violations of the Democratic Republic of Korea’s international obligations as set out in several UN Security Council resolutions,” Mogherini said in a statement, expressing her “full support to Japan and the people of Japan in the face of this direct threat”.

The new missile launch, which followed weeks of tension and sharp exchanges between Washington and Pyongyang, “represents a serious threat to international peace and security”, the EU chief diplomat added, calling on Pyongyang to “refrain from any further provocative action that could increase regional and global tensions”.

The EU “fully supports calls for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council” on Tuesday, stated Mogherini, who stressed that it was “essential for the international community to be united to respond to this threat.”
