Brexit – the Europeans and British will meet to negotiate for the fifth time on Monday

The EU and the UK will meet for the fifth round of Brexit negotiations on Monday. Brexit is the term used for the UK’s exit from the EU. There has been little progress so far, and tensions within the British government have become worse and worse.

This fifth round comes barely two weeks after the fourth. The tone at the end of the fourth round was slightly more positive than the previous ones. The EU’s head negotiator, Frenchman Michel Barnier, said that there had been no progress several times.

The British Prime Minister Theresa May made a speech a few days before the fourth round. She touched on the improved atmosphere around the negotiations. Up until now, the British have not been very open to discussing the three issues European MPs consider priorities: the rights of EU citizens after Brexit, the “divorce” bill and the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The British are mainly worried about the future relationship between the UK and the EU after they leave on the 29th of March 2019. The Europeans want “significant progress” on their three priorities before talking about the future.
