Glyphosate: authorization renewed for another 5 years by a Member States majority

The authorization of the use of glyphosate — an active substance used in herbicides — has been renewed on Monday afternoon for five years by a majority of Member States, the Cabinet of Agricultural Minister Denis Ducarme announced. He regretted the position adopted by his colleagues. Belgium voted against the renewal.

A 65.7% majority was achieved in favour of renewing the authorization of glyphosate, the authorization of which was coming to its end on 15 December. The minister “emphatically deplored that no provision was made for a ‘phasing out’ of the glyphosate, nor for a budget for the financing of alternatives,” his spokesman informed the Belga Agency.

Belgium will contact other countries which have voted against the renewal — notably France, Italy, Austria, and Luxembourg — to come to an agreement on a common view, and to seek alternatives to this substance mainly used in the Roundup commercialized by Monsanto.
