The European Commission wishes the post-Brexit transition to be completed by the 31st of December 2020, the end of the EU’s current Multiannual Financial Framework, EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier said on Wednesday. The transition has to be “short and limited in time” and “allow the British to prepare”, he said. “The transition and finalization of the orderly withdrawal go together,” he added, stressing that the EU would not agree to go back on the points that led to an agreement at the first phase of the negotiations with Britain.

Recommendations on the transition presented by Barnier on Wednesday have to be approved by the 29th of January by the Member States, after which negotiations on the issue can be opened officially with Britain.
