Brexit: Boris Johnson wants commemorative stamps despite the government’s opposition

Should the British Postal service, Royal Mail, issue a special stamp to commemorate the UK’s departure from the EU? It’s what the British Foreign Affairs Minister Boris Johnson wants, but the Minister in charge of the postal service thinks this would create division.

The debate has been raging on the other side of the channel for a while, ever since the British postal service refused to issue a special stamp to commemorate Brexit. Brexit will officially happen in March 2019. The Sun launched a campaign to make Royal Mail listen to other opinions, which received support from Boris Johnson.

“Our departure from the EU will be a momentous occasion in British history. Let’s have a commemorative stamp that shows the world we achieved Brexit”, the controversial Foreign Affairs Minister told the paper.

“BoJo”, the ex-mayor of London, is one of the people that helped the Brexit camp win the June 2016 referendum. Theresa May may have chosen Johnson, but she has kept him away from the Brexit negotiating team. He has distanced himself from the government’s official line several times.

Margot James, the State Secretary in charge of the postal services, said bringing out special stamps to celebrate Brexit could create division. “They (Royal Mail) do not intend to create them and I am not going to get involved one way or another”, she said.
