Tuesday’s meeting between Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, and some MEPs in Brussels to get some explanations on the social network’s shortcomings with respect to the users’ data protection, will finally be transmitted live on the net, announced the EU Parliament Monday. “I spoke to Mr. Zuckerberg about the possibility of a live transmission of that meeting on the net. I am pleased to announce that he accepted this new request,” twitted the President of the EU Parliament, Antonio Tajani.
The meeting in the European capital between heads of the EU Parliament’s political groups and Mr. Zuckerberg, called for by the EU after the Cambridge Analytical scandal broke out, had been announced last Wednesday and was initially to be held behind closed doors.
But several participants had deplored the fact that it was to be held behind closed doors. They demanded that Mr. Zuckerberg account publicly, as he had done at length last month before the American congressmen.
This meeting is all the more important in view of the fact that it is to be held three days before the entry into force, May 25, of a European legislation aiming at better protecting Europeans’ personal data.
The Italian Tajani welcomed on his Twitter account the fact that Mr. Zuckerberg has accepted a live transmission of the meeting; “It is excellent news for the EU citizens. I thank him for the respect he is showing for the EU Parliament.”
The time of the meeting was slightly delayed, since it is now announced sometime between 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. Initially, it was to start at 5:45 p.m.
Besides, Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Tajani will hold a half-hour bilateral meeting, between 5:45 and 6:15 p.m., indicated Monday a spokesperson of the EU Parliament’s President.
