Trade: EU appeals to China, Russia and USA to “avoid chaos’’

The EU Council President, Donald Tusk, appealed to China Monday in Beijing, and also to the US and Russia, to “avoid chaos,’’ just as Donald Trump’s America has entered into a power struggle with his major trading partners. “It is not too late to avoid conflict and chaos,’’ stated Mr. Tusk during a meeting with the Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, proposing to initiate a reform of the World Trade Organization. “We are all aware that the world’s architecture is changing before our eyes,’’ Mr. Tusk said, reminding that “the world we have built for decades has brought peace to Europe, growth to China and an end of the cold war.’’

“It is the common duty of Europe and China, but of America and Russia as well, to be careful not to destroy that world order, but rather to improve it, and not engage commercial battles which, so often throughout our history led to open conflicts,” he added.

“This is why I ask our Chinese hosts, but also Presidents Trump and Poutine, to jointly launch a process of complete reform of the WTO,’’ Mr. Tusk went on.

The European Council’s President is in Beijing, with former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, on the occasion of the annual China-EU Summit.

The two men were also received by Chinese President Xi Jinping. “We have agreed to say that, in the current international circumstances, it is important to defend multilateralism and free trade,’’ declared the Chinese Prime-Minister.
