European Parliament wants further reduction of CO2 emissions from heavy-duty trucks

The European Parliament’s Commission on Environment on Thursday adopted a tougher stance than the European Commission on the reduction of CO2 emissions by heavy-duty vehicles. In May, Europe’s governing body had proposed to reduce average CO2 emissions by new trucks and lorries by 15% between 2019 and 2025, and by 30% by 2030. However, the parliamentarians have now set the bar higher. Under the new targets, by 2025, emissions need to be 20% less than in 2019, while the reduction goal for 2030 has been set at 35%.

The European Parliament should approve these new goals at its November plenary, before going into negotiations with the Member States in the European Council. Discussions are already in progress with Member States on reducing CO2 emissions by cars and vans.
