On Thursday, Kinshasa ordered the European Union (EU) to withdraw its representative from the Democratic Republic of the Congo within “48 hours”. The move is retaliation for the EU’s maintainance of European sanctions, targeting 14 Congolese figures. These include the presidential election candidate.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Léonard She Okitundu, declared, with three days to go before the presidential election on Sunday, “The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo invites, out of necessity, the European Council to withdraw its Head of Mission, with immediate effect and within 48 hours, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”
