More than 30,000 people attend the European Institution’s Open Day

Over 30,000 people flocked to the Open Day hosted by the Brussels European Institutions, which took place on Saturday. The visitors were curious to learn more about the inner workings of the EU. The Open Day took place on the same day as the Fête de l’Iris, which lasted several days. It is also close to the anniversary of the Schuman declaration (9th of May 1950), famously made by French Foreign Affairs minister Robert Schuman. Schuman’s declaration is said to have laid some of the foundations for the EU’s construction.

“Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity”, Robert Schuman stated that day.

More than 69 years later, this year’s Open Day in the European capital was logically centred around the upcoming European elections. Belgium will take part in the European elections on the 26th of May, the same day as its legislative and regional elections.

The European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Committee of the Regions and the European External Action Service all took part this year. It was the 27th European Open Day.
