Union activists voted on Monday in favour of a pilots' strike at British Airways, the first in forty years. The British airline will on Tuesday attempt to prevent the matter going to tribunal because many travellers would be affected by a strike in the summer season.

The schedule of the strike has not yet been set, as the decision will not be taken until the current court hearing has been concluded.

The pilots are demanding a pay increase. They also want to reach fresh agreements on profit-sharing and payment in shares, emphasising that during the financial crisis they accepted salary reductions to keep the company afloat but that this crisis was long over.

British Airways is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG) that also owns the Spanish carrier Iberia.
