15 slopes open in Eastern municipalities

The Eastern Tourist Agency has reported that the heavy snowfall from the night between Thursday and Friday has made it possible to open virtually all of the ski resorts located in the Eastern municipalities. At Belgium's highest peak, Signal de Botrange, the snow is up to 40cm deep in some areas. “Temperatures are below zero and snow conditions are excellent. It’s been a long time since we’ve had such brilliant conditions for cross-country skiing. Furthermore, everything seems to suggest the snow will last for several days,” said a very pleased Fechir Alexander, manager of Signal de Botrange.

Conditions were also favourable in the Rocherath/Elsenborn area, with 40cm of snow recorded.

The snow is estimated to be between 15 and 25cm deep on most other slopes around Hautes Fagnes. Spa’s Thier des Rexhons cross-country ski track is also useable and the resort plans to open its downhill slopes on Saturday. Other resorts, mainly in the province of Luxembourg, expected to open during the day.
