National Stadium – “We haven’t been told the whole truth”

The Sports Minister for the French community, René Collin, laid it on thick when talking about the National Stadium project recently. “As the French-speaking Minister for Sport, I have two big problems, two things I am angry about. One, the major risk to the future of the Van Damme memorial. Two, the unequal way football clubs are treated”, the Minister said during an interview with the Sudpresse papers. The Minister thinks that Anderlecht club is favoured over other clubs. “I even call it the Anderlecht stadium!”, he added.

Mr Collin has also criticised the stadium’s cost to Brussels tax payers. “We were told they wouldn’t have to pay anything, that the stadium would be entirely financed by private partners. We are currently spending 4.1 million euros of public money a year, and this could continue for 60 years!” says René Collin. “We are estimating 30 years, but it could be increased by 15 years twice, which would make it a total of 60 years. The final bill will probably be as much as 246 million euros!”
