Heightened security alert for Red Devils versus Israel match

Drastic security measures will be in place for the European Football Cup qualifier between the Red Devils and Israel, according to newspapers from the Mediahuis press group on Friday. Backpacks and any other bags will not be allowed in the stadium, reveals the Football League website. A bag could serve to hide weapons, or even worse, a bomb. Fans will be submitted to additional body searches. And there will be a massive police presence at the stadium.

“In Belgium, any event involving Israel implies extra security. Israel remains a potential target for Muslims. In our country this means a threat level 3 (orange alert) decreed by Ocam (Threat Assessment Coordination Body),” explains a source.

The heightened security alert led to 2,000 tickets sales being cancelled. “These tickets will be sold on the day but only to people who have already seen the Red Devils play,” explains Michael Vandersteen from the 1895 fan club.

The match is scheduled for October 13th at the Roi Badouin stadium.
