Red Devils - Belgian delegation hits Switzerland

On Sunday, at around 9.00 p.m., the Red Devils arrived in Switzerland to undertake the second part of their preparation, for the forthcoming European Championships in France (10th June to 10th July. From Monday to Friday, the Red Devils will be training at the Juan Antonio Samaranch Stadium of the fourth division club Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy. On Saturday at 4.15 p.m., the Devils will face Switzerland in Geneva, returning to Belgium in the evening. From Monday May 30th, the Devils will polish their preparation in Genk.

Two “friendies” at the Roi Baudouin Stadium feature in their schedule. Wednesday 1 June (8.45 p.m.) against Finland and Sunday 5 June (at 6 p.m.) against Norway. On June 7th, the Belgian delegation heads for Bordeaux.

The first match for Belgium in the European Championships is fixed for Monday June 13th in Lyon against Italy.

On Monday Laurent Ciman (with 44 selections and 9 caps) rejoined the selection. Whilst he had not been kept in the national team since September 2015, on the occasion of the qualifying match in Cyprus (0-1), the Montreal Impact defender was called up again owing to numerous uncertainties relating to the back row.

Besides, the withdrawal of Vincent Kompany and Björn Engels which is (highly) questionable, Nicolas Lombaerts is complaining of a slight muscular injury. Dedryck Boyata is suffering the after-effects of a hamstring injury and, for several days, Jason Denayer has been bothered by hip pain.

On Sunday, Thomas Meunier had to leave the pitch during the Championship game against Ostend. Apparently, the thigh injury from which he is suffering will not prevent the right-wingback of Club Bruges of joining the team in Lausanne. One or two days away from the group should suffice to ensure that he pulls through.

Wilmots has until May 31st to submit his final list of 23 players for the tournament.
