Roberto Martinez to be made honorary citizen of Waterloo on 2 September

Red Devils coach Roberto Martinez will be made an honorary citizen of the commune of Waterloo, where he resides, the municipal authorities confirmed on Monday. The event will take place on 2 September during the traditional "Braderie du centre" festival. A procession will proceed along the Chaussée de Bruxelles (Brussels Road) from 02.00 p.m. and the ceremony will take place at 03.00 p.m. at Albert 1st Square.

The Waterloo authorities explained that the title of honorary citizen is a rare distinction that is only granted to personalities who contribute to the renown of the commune.

Roberto Martinez, who is also a candidate for the title of best trainer of the year, awarded by the International Football Federation, FIFA, is not the only football personality to have received the award. It was granted to Georges Grün in 1986 following the Red Devils' exploits at the Football World Cup in Mexico in that year.

The former professional football player will also be present on 2 September in Waterloo.
