Belgian Eden Hazard out of top-100 athletes

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo is world’s most famous athlete, according to rankings released Friday by ESPN (US television network). Eden Hazard was the only Belgian in the top-100 in 2018, but none are present this year.

Ronaldo is ahead of NBA Lakers’ superstar LeBron James (2nd) and his great Argentinean rival Lionel Messi (3rd). This ranking is established by taking into account for each sportsman the number of searches generated on the internet, sponsorship contracts and subscribers on the social networks.

Brazilian Paris SG Neymar is fourth, just ahead of the Irish MMA (mixed martial arts) star Conor McGregor.

Only three women appear in this ranking: tennis players Serena Williams (17th), Maria Sharapova (37th) and Sania Mirza (93rd).

It is football that dominates this “World Fame 100" classification but is also noted the presence of eleven cricketers from the Indian subcontinent, and the Esports star, Ninja (41st).

American football player Colin Kaepernick, who has not played in the NFL since 2017, is 57th. In 2016 he launched the “boycott of American anthem movement” to protest against police violence towards the black population in the USA.
