Brussels gears up for Belgian Beer Weekend

Forty-Five Belgian breweries will showcase their brews at the Belgian Beer Weekend (BBW), which is being held from Friday night to Sunday night on Brussels’ main square, the Grand-Place de Bruxelles. Just a stone’s throw away, at the Place Fontainas, the Moeder Lambic café will host a festival of Italian beer.

Patrons will be able to enjoy more than 400 types of beer, served in 15- or 20-centilitre glasses, at the BBW, organized by the Federation of Belgian Breweries. This year’s edition of the festival will have a stronger local colour due to the presence of the Senne Brewery, marking the first time in 19 editions that a Brussels brewery is represented.

Throughout the weekend, various types of entertainment on the theme of beer are programmed. On Saturday afternoon, a colourful parade of vehicles and carts from historic breweries will kick off at the square of the Nouveau Marché aux Grains (New Grain Market Square) and make its way to the Grand-Place. Sunday’s highlight will be a procession of the different beer fraternities, each with its own typical toga.

The festival will be open to the public from about six p.m. on Friday while stands will close on Sunday at 7.45 p.m. Backpacks are strongly advised against. Special BBW corks for purchasing the beers at the festival can be bought with bank cards.

At the same time, Moeder Lambic café is offering the sixth edition of its Weekend of Italian Beer featuring about a dozen Italian craft breweries as well as representatives of Italian gastronomy.
