Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a speech in the Ethias Arena in Hasslet, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, on Sunday. He mostly listed his government’s achievements, and asked Turks in Belgium to think about them when voting for a new Turkish parliament. However he did not mention the name of his party, AKP. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, former prime minister and current president of Turkey, is especially popular. Tickets for his speech in Hasselt sold out in a couple of hours.
The Turkish president was greeted like a pop star by some 15,000 supporters. His speech lasted just over an hour, and opened with his government’s achievements. He said that the team in place was “on the right track” and added that voters in the legislative elections should remember that. Mr. Erdogan managed to not say the name of his party (AKP) at any time during his speech, a party he created and which has dominated political life in Turkey for several years.
The Turkish president also had a few messages specifically for European Turks. He highlighted the importance of learning local languages and fitting into a country. He added however that no-one should forget their own language and culture.
