The Belgian tourist who suffered terrible burns after falling into a geyser in northern Chili’s Antofagasta region, died in a clinic in Santiago on Thursday, announced a hospital source. “The woman died at dawn on Thursday,” AFP (Agence France-Presse) learned from the source from the hospital she was being treated at, on condition of anonymity.
The 68-year-old was admitted to hospital in a serios condition on Friday after she fell into a geyser. She suffered burns to 80% of her body.
The woman was on holiday with her husband and allegedly fell backwards as she was taking a photo, according to local police.
The Tatio geothermal geysers in the Antofagasta region are located at over 4,000 meters above mean sea level, in San Pedro de Atacama (1,600 km north of Santiago), and attract thousands of tourists each year.
