Blue lights to illuminate monuments for UN 70th anniversary on Saturday

Over 150 monuments, buildings, museums, bridges, and other landmarks in over 45 countries will be lit up blue (the United Nations’ official colour), as part of a worldwide campaign to celebrate UN Day and the institution’s 70th anniversary, reveals a UN press release on Wednesday. Several Belgian monuments will be illuminated.

The Grand-Place with its town hall (Hotel de Ville), the Flagey and Bozar buildings in Brussels and Ghent’s Ghelamco Arena will light blue on Saturday evening, as well as Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Great pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, and the Empire State Building in New York.

“A blue wave will spread across countries and continents as landmarks from around the world take part in this international event,” adds the institution. The anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations is commemorated every year on October 24th as United Nations Day.
