Hit-and-run driver who killed Belgian journalist in Denver faces six-year prison sentence

The driver of the car who smashed into the Belgian journalist Eric Vancoppenolle on July 19th 2015, fatally wounding him, has received a six-year prison sentence, reports La Dernière Heure on Wednesday. The hit-and–run driver was drunk and driving very fast when the incident happened, after which he fled. The information was confirmed by the lawyer for the victim’s family.

Eric Vancoppenolle had been knocked over, upon returning to his hotel after a road trip of several weeks in the USA. Aged 47, he worked for the website Brusselsnieuws.be, after having been employed at the Belga press agency, at Nieuwsblad, at Bozar (the fine arts museum) and even as one the former minister Jos Chabert’s private staff.
