European foreign ministers, meeting on Monday in Brussels, supported the French initiative to convene an international conference with a view to relaunching the Middle East peace process. The conference which will take place in Paris by the summer, will bring together the Israeli and Palestinian parties, as well as stakeholders in the region and leading international players.
“I have provided Mr Ayrault (French Minister for Foreign Affairs) with Belgium’s support for this initiative”, the Belgian Foreign Minister, Didier Reynders (of the MR – Liberal and Conservative-Liberal party) said. He also stressed that he had requested the EU’s involvement in the process.
The European Union favours a solution based upon the co-existence of both states which responds to the needs of Israeli and Palestinian security and the Palestian’s aspirations for a state and to sovereignty.
