Reynders suggests a talk between Israelis and Palestinians, in Brussels

The Foreign Affairs Minister Didier Reynders is backing the French idea of an international conference to relaunch the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. While he was visiting the region, the diplomacy chief said he had taken the Palestinian government’s wish to have Belgium play a role into consideration. He put forward the idea of economic dialogue between Israel and Palestine, to be held in Brussels.

Mr Reynders will meet with the top Palestinian authorities on Monday morning.

On Saturday evening, he spoke to the President of the Palestinian government Mahmoud Abbas over the phone. This was just before Abbas left for Cairo, to try and reconcile the Fatah and Hamas. A Belgian source has said that he was in favour of trying to start the peace process up again, which could be through a conference. Mr Abbas was also on board with Belgium taking part.
