Belgium refuses emergency aid to daughters of couple killed at Jewish Museum

Belgium has refused to give emergency aid to the daughters of the couple Mira and Emmanuel Riva, the Israeli couple assassinated on May 24th, 2014, in Brussels during the attack on the Jewish Museum. Thus reports La Dernière Heure today (Wednesday).  The couple's children, who currently live in Tel Aviv were seeking financial assistance to the tune of 15,000 euros from the Commission for Aid to Victims of Intentional Acts of Violence.

The orphans' barrister, having made the request more than ten months after the attack, said that the aforesaid Commission do not now consider that Shira and Ayelet Riva (aged 15 and 16 years old at the time of incident) might indeed have been, at that time, in a genuine emergency position.

Yet, Ms Sohier, their barrister, highlights to La Dernière Heure that although it took ten to eleven months to lodge the request, this was not because the young girls were not in a genuine difficult financial situation. It was, however, because the Belgian Commission for Aid to Victims demands a comprehensive file on a given case. This is obviously easier to put together when the victims live in Belgium, rather than abroad.
