Hollande rejects opposition calls to toughen up anti-terror legislation after Normany church attack
A worried François Holland.

Yesterday (Tuesday), the French Socialist President, François Hollande, rejected calls from the Right and the Far-right to toughen up the anti-terrorist legislation still further. These came after an attack in a Normandy church. He considers that the laws in force since 2015 provide “the authorities with the scope to act in such situations.”

"Restricting our freedoms would not be an effective way to fight the war on terror," he said during a solemn televised address from the French presidential palace. A little earlier, his predecessor in the Elysée, Nicolas Sarkozy, had demanded that the Executive “dramatically change its response to terrorism.”
