Greek summit of southern European countries at beginning of September
Plans for a southern European summit are in the pipeline.

France confirmed yesterday (Monday) that it would host at the “beginning of September” a “meeting of southern European countries.” This has been spurred upon the initiative of the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and the French President, François Hollande, will attend the talks.

The government spokesman, Stéphane Le Foll, stated, “At the beginning of September, Southern Europe will host a summit. This has been proposed by the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and François Hollande has accordingly accepted the invitation.”

A Greek government source had revealed at the beginning of this month to AFP (Agence France-Presse) that Greece was preparing for a summit of southern European countries, intended to discuss both economic and migratory issues. As to the date, this summit may indeed take place on 9th September. Cyprus, France, Malta, Italy and Spain have all been invited.

Greece has faced an economic crisis for six years. It has survived thanks to loans from creditors. Recently, the country has faced an entirely unprecedented immigration. This has led it to appeal for European Union assistance.

Alexis Tsipras has regularly called for an economic policy aimed more at growth and less towards austerity, in terms of managing public expenditure.

Moreover Athens has, on several occasions, denounced the lack of assistance from other European countries to manage the refugee crisis.
