The Utoya memorial will be designed by a Belgian

The memorial to the victims of extreme-right terrorist Andres Breivik will be designed by Belgian Bas Smets’ architectural office, De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad reported on Saturday. The artist has already designed a memorial for the Brussels attacks, which is located in Soignes forest.

Bas Smets’ office was selected along with Norwegian office Manthey Kula and Matthias Ekman, who has done research into commemorative monuments. They were chosen based on their vision and experience. The memorial has not yet been designed.

Last year, Norway cancelled a memorial project after the inhabitants of the island of Utoya turned down a project by Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg. He designed a memorial where a slit was cut into the cliff surrounding a lake, facing the island.

Sixty-nine people were killed during the massacre in 2011.
