Some 140,000 Turks in Belgium due to vote in Turkey’s elections

Some 140,000 Turks in Belgium have registered for the 24-June legislative and presidential elections in Turkey, the Turkish embassy in Brussels told the Belga news agency on Thursday. Belgium-based Turks who have registered on the voters’ lists will be able to cast their ballots on the 15th and 19th of June in Brussels and Antwerp to elect their president - Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking re-election – and members of parliament.

About 80% of Turks living in Belgium have already registered, the Turkish embassy stated.

To avoid the long queues that voters experienced in 2017 at the referendum on strengthening the president’s powers, polling places will be installed at the Heysel (Brussels Expo) and Antwerp Expo.

They will be open from 9.a.m to 9 p.m. and the vote will be done manually.

June’s elections, called early by Erdogan, will mark Turkey’s transition to a presidential system in which the head of state enjoys stronger powers. If there is no overall winner at the first round, a second round will be held on the 8th of July.
