Paris attacks – Jawad Bendaoud sets fire to his cell

Jawad Bendaoud set fire to and trashed his cell on Friday, several French newspapers reported on Saturday. He is suspected of lending his apartment in rue du Corbillon, Saint-Denis to Abdelhamid Abbaoud.

He set fire to some clothes with a lighter at Villepinte prison (Seine-Saint-Denis). The guards had to quickly put the flames out, reports the LCI news channel. The website 20minutes.fr said he set a fire outside his cell by sliding paper and fabric under the door of his cell. The source said the fire department had to intervene quickly. The floor of the passageway and the door were damaged by the small fire.

After being put back in his cell, Jawad Bendaoud tore the frame off a window and tried to break it. He was moved to a “suicide-watch” cell.

Jawad Bendaoud, who is in solitary confinement, was protesting against the way he has been treated. According to 20minutes.fr, his behaviour is due to a SIM card and charger being discovered during a search on Friday afternoon.

Jawad Bendaoud’s apartment in Saint-Denis was used as a hiding place by Abdelhamid Abbaoud, who is thought to have coordinated the 13th of November attacks. His cousin Hansa Aït Boulhacen, shot dead during a police assault, is the other suspect.
