Natagora encourages public to take part in annual butterfly count

The weekend of August 1st and 2nd is the date set for the annual butterfly count, announced the wildlife protection society, Natagora, on Friday, and the association is calling on the public to help out in the 9th edition of the census. Each year Natagora assesses the butterfly population in order to decide on the best conservation strategies for a species that is in worryingly low numbers in rural areas. Anyone can offer to lend a hand by signing up on Natagora’s website. The volunteers are invited to observe and count the butterflies. They can also cross check against a visual list of the species that are often found in our gardens in summertime.

Butterflies are fragile from a habitat perspective and as such are very good indicators of the health of the environment. This is why it is important to get as much information about them as possible, points out Natagora.
