The new Zwin nature centre, in Knokke-Heist (Western Flanders), will open its doors to the public next Friday, on the 10th of June. No less than 25 million euros has been invested in this project, which also includes a new observation centre. They want to make the centre one of the most popular nature attraction centres on the Belgian coast. The centre will be officially opened on Friday.
There is a nature education centre for visitors. They will get a passport, which they can use to put themselves in the place of 10 different types of bird, and learn to fly like them. It is laid out like an airport, as Zwin is also an international airport for migrating birds. Zwin is a beautiful nature reserve, on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands.
A new observation centre has also been incorporated into the landscape. It will also be a dam to protect the coast. Seven themed cabins have also been set up, to let visitors discover the world of birds and nature interactively.
The “audio dune” is another interesting initiative. It is a crater shaped area where visitors can listen to bird sounds. Swans perched on poles will also grab visitor’s attention. There are several new educational spaces, including a laboratory.
The new Zwin nature centre project had a budget of 25 million euros. The Western Flanders province provided 20 million euros.
Between now and 2020, the Zwin centre will be increase in size by 120 hectares, which is almost double its current size.
