Sea Life takes in its first seal this winter

The first seal of the winter season was washed up on the beach at Knokke-Heist on Monday morning. Fireman took in the young mammal weighing 34 kilogrammes. So reported the marine attractions centre this Monday. The first seals are generally washed up at the end of December. “We assume that the particularly mild winter has been easier for baby seals to get through than normal. Hence the reason why we have not been able to welcome them sooner,” explains Manu Potin, who manages the team responsible for animal care at the center.

For the Sea Life Blankenberge animal centre this new recruit is totally unprecedented. “This is a major first for Sea Life. The seal we have taken in has entirely white fur,” stresses Manu Potin. After a time, grey seals lose their white and downy coat, which makes seeing this smooth white fur somewhat exceptional.

Sea Life says that the young seal is doing well. He weighs 34 kilogrammes and does not have a fever. Sea Life will keep him under observation for a little while longer before releasing him.
