Elise Mertens has won a match against the Russian tennis player Varvara Gracheva on court 7 on Friday at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris. The victory pushes Mertens into the last 16 round of the French Open.
The match started at 12:30, with Mertens winning the first set 6-2, and the second set 6-3.
Mertens is Belgium’s top female tennis player and is currently seeded at No. 32 in the Women’s Tennis Association. The 26-year-old from Leuven achieved her career-high when she ranked No.12 in singles on November 26 in 2018. On May 10 2021, she became the world’s No.1 in women’s doubles for the first time.
Mertens turned pro in 2013 when she was 17 and has since won six singles and 15 doubles titles on the WTA Tour.
Mertens played the Russian Gracheva on Friday, as France decided to not ban Russian and Belarusian players after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
By contrast, the UK has banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from playing at Wimbledon this summer. However, Russian and Belarusian players will not be allowed to have their country or flags identified.
