Last season's Belgian Pro League champions Club Brugge debuted their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 against Bayer Leverkusen last night, while Brussels clubs Anderlecht and Union Saint-Gilloise will play their European ties tonight.

After a mixed start to their defence of last year's league title, Club Brugge and new coach Carl Hoefkens soothed any doubts fans may have had by beating German side Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the first match of Group B in the Champions League.

They have 19-year-old centre-back Loubadhe Abakar Sylla to thank for the win, who took advantage of a mistake by the German team's goalkeeper to score the only goal of the match at the 42nd minute of the tie.

Also part of the victorious side last night was Casper Nielsen, the Danish midfielder who joined the Belgian champions from Brussels side Union Saint-Gilloise this summer.
