A man suspected of involvement in the death of Gino, the nine-year-old boy whose lifeless body was found on Saturday in the Dutch Limburg region of Geelen already has a child-abuse conviction, Belga News Agency reports.
In 2017, a Maastricht court had convicted Donny M., then aged 17, on charges of threatening and attacking two boys and abusing one of them, the attorney of one of the victims said on Sunday after information on the case appeared in the press.
The abuses took place on 28 June 2017 and in December 2017, the Maastricht court handed Donny M. a three-year suspended sentence in a juvenile detention centre. He also spent close to five months in detention and was treated in a centre in Eindhoven that specializes in mental health care for juveniles.
The police had already stated at a press conference on Saturday that the suspect was known to law enforcement but had not given any details.
The young man, now 22, will appear before a court on Tuesday or Wednesday on suspicion of kidnapping and involvement in Gino’s death.
The suspect lives close to a burnt-out house in Geleen where police found the young boy’s body early Saturday morning. Its location had been pinpointed by the suspect, who had been arrested shortly before.
