Ancient gold coins worth millions of euros stolen from German museum

Celtic gold coins worth several million euros have been stolen from a museum in Manching, a town in the south Germany.

Employees of the museum discovered on Tuesday morning that the glass case was broken and the treasure was missing, local police told French news agency AFP.

The disappearance of the treasure is a “complete disaster” for the Bavarian town, its mayor, Herbert Nerb, told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Nerb said the thieves had cut the telephone lines to bypass security, which the police did not confirm.

The collection of more than 450 gold coins was an important part of the Celtic and Roman Art Museum in Manching.

Discovered in 1999, some of the coins date back to “100 years before Christ,” according to the police, which said the loot amounted to “several million euros.”
