In a northern suburb of Barcelona, a commuter train collided with another commuter train that was stationary in a station at about 7:50 this morning.

Both trains were bound for the centre of the Catalan capital. Some 150 people were injured in the incident, the Civil Defense said.

Three people were taken to the hospital, but most passengers came away with minor injuries. These were mainly bruises to the arms or legs.

“There was panic, screaming and fear. The safety breaches are unacceptable,” one passenger told Spanish reporters from the newspaper La Vanguardia.

During the morning rush hour, suburban trains are usually very full, leaving many people unable to find a seat. Consequently, at the slightest stop or jolt, many people can fall.

The cause of the accident, which occurred at Montcada i Reixac station, was initially unknown.

However, there has been repeated criticism that there is too little investment in the rail system. Trains arrive late or not at all and there are often minor accidents.
