On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, ambassadors from 11 countries lay wreaths on Friday at the Dossin barracks in Mechelen.

“Between 1942 and 1944, 25,490 Jews and 353 Roma were deported from the Dossin Barracks,” the Barracks recalled “The final destination of most trains was Auschwitz-Birkenau. Few of the deportees survived."

“Today, the former military base is a place of serenity, dedicated to meditation and remembrance, a memorial,” it added.

The international day of commemoration with the victims of the Holocaust takes place every year on 27 January, the day in 1945 when the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated.

Dossin Barracks takes part in the commemoration each year. This time around, it invited some diplomatic representatives based in Belgium.

Ambassadors from Estonia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States each lay a wreath at the barracks. They then visited the Memorial and the museum.
