Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on Thursday at the age of 92.
Singh is regarded as the architect of the economic reforms that opened the world's most populous country to the global market three decades ago.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the nation's grief on X, saying India mourns the loss of "one of its most important leaders."
Singh, who came from a modest background, rose to become a respected economist. He served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and was known for his role in liberalising India's economy.
As Finance Minister in 1991, he ended the economic isolation of the country.
In 2004, he became the first Sikh Prime Minister of India, recognisable by his blue turban.
Singh was undergoing treatment for age-related illnesses and was hospitalised on Thursday after losing consciousness at home.
