Nearly 10,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats this year, arriving in Britain from France, according to figures released by the British government on Saturday.

In total, 9,988 people have already reached the UK so far in 2022, after navigating through the congested shipping routes from France.

The Defense Ministry confirmed that 40 people were brought ashore from one boat on Friday.

In 2021, a total of 28,526 people made the crossing, compared to 8,466 in 2020, 1,843 in 2019 and 299 in 2018.

The British government has a very strict asylum policy, hoping to deter migrants who want to make the crossing. Migrants who enter the country illegally no longer have the right to apply for asylum.
