The upcoming 2024/2025 season at the Royal Theatre which houses the national opera will be themed around hope and boldness.
Unveiling the new programme, the curators commented that art can make a difference and "counter passive consumption by challenging the status quo to break with traditions that hold back progress.”
The new season starts with “Siegfried”, the third instalment of Richard Wagner’s four-part “Ring of the Nibelungen”. It follows successful the first two parts, “Das Rheingold” and “Die Walküre”, aired last season.
“The fearless Siegfried, a mythical figure from the opera world known for embracing heroic challenges and shattering the gods’ dominance, epitomises the power of humanity,” elaborates Peter de Caluwe, General and Artistic Director.
The opera lineup will feature further pieces from renowned composers, such as “I Grotteschi”. This two-part production weaves together music and intrigue from three Claudio Monteverdi operas.
One of the season’s novelties: an opera adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel “Madame Bovary”. Composer Harold Noben will work on Flaubert’s 19th-century masterpiece in collaboration with director Michael De Cock.
Music Director Alain Altinoglu spearheads the concert programme, showcasing, among others, Giuseppe Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” and Gustav Mahler’s “Eighth Symphony”.
For the fifth consecutive season, La Monnaie offers a diverse lineup of dance performances, including “Troika Dance” that will spotlight baroque adaptations.
