The civic platform BeHeroes has put out a call for everyday heroes to be put forward who will be thanked for their actions on the Belgian National Day (21 July).

Traditionally, the National Day parade on 21 July in the city centre of Brussels pays tribute to Belgian safety and service agencies, such as emergency teams, military, police, and firefighters.

However, there are countless Belgians who also make a significant impact with simple acts of kindness, such as neighbours assisting the vulnerable or ill, grandparents lending support wherever necessary, and volunteers tackling a wide range of tasks.

BeHeroes, with the support of King Philippe and Home Affairs Minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V), once again wants to honour these 'everyday heroes' on National Day this year. "These people have been selflessly and actively working for each other and society for many years."

It launched its fifth campaign on Friday to call on people to nominate these heroes. "At www.beheroes.be, anyone can nominate his/her hero until 2 June," the organisation noted.

Once approved, the submitted stories will be published on the website, and 50 heroes and the person who nominated them will be chosen to witness the National Holiday ceremony from the grandstand of honour. "Moreover, a number of exceptional heroes and their nominees will be received by the King at the Royal Palace in September." By doing so, King Philippe wants to draw more attention to these people.
