An investigation into the death of a 28-year-old detainee at Ghent Prison has been launched by the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office, according to reports from Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet Van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg.
The vulnerable individual, Amah Ayité, had severe mental health issues and was found last Thursday in a comatose state by prison guards. He was rushed to the hospital where he subsequently passed away.
Originally from Togo, Ayité, also a diabetic patient, had been ill for weeks. He refused to eat, was vomiting and would not take his medication. Ghent Prison guards reportedly raised concerns about his health condition multiple times with no subsequent action, according to media sources.
The East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed it has initiated an investigation into Ayité's death. "A forensic doctor has been appointed," they said.
"Currently, there is no indication of malicious intent or third-party involvement in the man's death. The investigation, however, is still ongoing."
